ROYLE (Arnold Haywood, 1819-1901, Physician to Prince Leopold and Member of the Royal Household) and William HAYWOOD (1821-1894, Surveyor and Engineer to the City of London Commission of Sewers)

Small collection of Cabinet Photos inscribed on the verso by Haywood three of them of Royle, the first by George Nightingale showing him at 4 years old, the next by James and Bayfield showing him aged 4¼ in a class of small boys, then by Arthur J. Melhuish showing him at 13 years old, the other two are of Lieutenant Colonel William Haywood, the first by Arthur J. Melhuish, signed and dated on the verso, showing him full length in uniform, 1882 and the final one by Alexander Bassano shows him half length in uniform with medals signed and inscribed on the verso to Royle “with the affectionate regards of”, each 6½” x 4¼”, no place, November

John Pitts, of Hatchard's bookshop, thanking him for his comments on his article "The Future of the Past", which the Archbishop has read "both for my morale and my instruction for the future", and talking of the General Synod's possible re-introduction of the Series I services "based on the Book of Common Prayer", with the need for the laity's involvement if it is to come about, 1 side folio, Lambeth Palace, 9th June

RUSSELL (Thomas, of the City of London, d. 1682, Grocer)

Copy of his will, in a neat hand, leaving to his wife Anne (née Duke) lands in Elmore and Barnwood, Glos., for life, and then to their unmarried only daughter, "it is my strict order" that any renewals of leases are to be at his wife's charge but in their daughter's name, the daughter is to get immediately "my Toft and piece of Ground ... in Little Distaff Lane" with the buildings on it, and "all my share in the good ship the Blessing & her Cargo now on a voyage to Guinea" which she is not to sell "till Mr. Thomas Deane my kinsman doth ... part with his share or the Proprietor[s] do make dividend or put her to sale", also to his wife the £1000 secured by a bond to his father-in-law on their marriage, to be found partly from selling a lease from the Bishop of Chichester "of three houses in Whites Alley near Chancery Lane", this in lieu of "her right to the third part of my Estate which perhaps she may otherwise claim by a Custom of the City of London", with the probate, 4 sides folio and 2 sides blank, London, 18th May - 5th August browned but very clear, blank margin of first side mended with old paper, guard strip on blank sixth side
