CHARPENTIER (Gustave, 1860-1956, French Operatic Composer)

Photograph with extremely faded signature and inscription "bien sympathiquement", to Charles Chincholles (1845-1902, journalist, novelist, dramatist and popular historian), showing the composer half length with a gentle smile and an enormous bow tie, 6" x 4", no date, circa light traces of laying down on the verso

Charpentier was 'the composer of Montmartre' and dressed the part with an artist's wide brimmed hat and cloak. He eschewed chamber music in favour of large, out-door pieces.
Chincholle was at one time secretary to Alexandre Dumas père and contributed to his papers "Le Mousquetaire" and "D'Artagnan".
