THE CHILDREN OF GEORGE V GEORGE (Duke of Kent, 1902-1942, Son of George V, Uncle of Elizabeth II) and his sister MARY (Countess of Harewood, 1897-1965, Princess Royal)

Inscription in George's young but confident hand Signed by them 'George' and 'Mary', George has added his brother's name JOHN (1905-1919, Prince) after his own, for Lady Eva DUGDALE (1860-1940), saying "We wish you and Mr. Dugdale a happy Xmas and New Year", written on the verso of an elegant Portrait Postcard Photo by Downey of their aunt Princess VICTORIA (1868-1935, Daughter of Edward VII & Alexandra), showing her in a plain wasp-waist jacket with fine embroidered edges, high necked collar under a broad flat hat and holding her dog on her arm, 5½" x 3½", no place, no date but close to that added in another hand to the photo,

In 1893, when Princess May became Duchess of York, she chose Lady Eva (née Greville, only daughter of the 4th Earl of Warwick), a childhood friend, as her first (at that time sole) Lady-in-Waiting. Known as 'Little Bird', as she also signed herself, she quickly became the Duchess's most efficient and devoted general manager. In 1895 Lady Eva married Frank Dugdale, (1857-1925, a Warwickshire gentleman and Yeomanry officer, later Colonel), who became Queen Mary's Equerry. Lady Eva's children were close in age to Queen Mary's - her third son was born three months before Prince John.
