FRIEDRICH III BY THE COURT PHOTOGRAPHER
FRIEDRICH III
(Wilhelm Nikolaus, 1831-1888, son-in-law of Queen Victoria, Emperor of Germany for 99 days)
Marvellous Imperial Cabinet photo by J. C. Schaarwächter, Berlin, signed and inscribed
inscribed in English "Frederick William Crown Prince of Germany & Prussia" with the place and date, showing him three quarters length in uniform with his hands folded over his sword, 12¾" x 7½", Berlin, February
Autograph material by Friedrich III is uncommon due to his early death from throat cancer. He only survived his father Wilhelm I by three months. As Crown Prince his position was made very difficult by his opposition to Bismarck and also as his wife Victoria, Empress Frederick antagonised the Prussian people with her aggressive & tactless Englishness.
Julius Cornelius Schaarwächter
(1847-1904) was one of the most prestigious photographic ateliers in imperial Berlin between the 1870s and about 1900.
