LANSDOWNE (Henry Charles Keith Petty-Fitzmaurice, 1845-1927, from 1866 5th Marquess, Statesman, Viceroy of India)

Fine Long Autograph Letter Signed with initials to my dear GATACRE (Sir William Forbes, 1843-1906, Lieutenant-General) saying that he is "delighted with your illustration of the humour of our tour which exactly hits off the idea. I cannot make up my mind to part with the original drawing which some day or other will be treasured among my Indian archives. I am therefore going to have it photographed with t view to sending a copy to Bill ... we all had a good laugh over the picture ...", 2 sides 8vo., Viceregal Lodge, Simla, 5th May

Lord Lansdowne was appointed Viceroy of India in the same year he left Canada. The viceroyalty, which he held from 1888 to 1894, was offered to him by the Conservative prime minister Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury, and marked the pinnacle of his career. He worked to reform the army, police, local government and the mint.
Gatacre served in India and Africa between 1862 and 1904. He commanded the British Army Division at the Battle of Omdurman and the 3rd Division during the first months of the Second Boer War, during which time he suffered a humiliating defeat at the Battle of Stormberg.
