"I AM LONGING FOR THE DAY WHEN I AM NO LONGER A SUCCESS AND CAN GET ON WITH MY WRITING IN PEACE!" SASSOON (Siegfried L., 1886-1967, Poet)

Fine Autograph Letter, unusually signed in full "Siegfried Sassoon" to Mr FABES (Gilbert, 1894-1973, Bookseller), saying that he is "very glad to inscribe a copy of my book for anyone who is a friend of Lady Ottoline Morrell. I enclose a slip for your copy of the other one, as I am very much oppressed by my correspondence at present. In fact I am longing for the day when I am no longer a success and can get on with my writing in peace! At the age of 44 the wine of popularity does not cause the same intoxication as it might have done ten years earlier ...", under the signature he has written "(a very much overworked signature. I shall buy a rubber stamp & a typewriter soon ...", 1 side 8vo., Wilsford Manor, nr Salisbury, Wilts headed paper, 12th October

Having started his writing career as a poet, in 1928 Sassoon turned to prose & published Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man, anonymously, though his name appeared in the second impression. His fictionalized autobiography of his early years in Kent, was an immediate success. He continued the story in Memoirs of an Infantry Officer (1930) and Sherston's Progress (1936).
Fabes wrote The Autobiography of a Bookin which book shares its life story, including its education in books and book collecting; written by the rare/antiquarian books manager at Foyles.
