"THE WILFRED BLUNT CHAPTER IS ONE OF THE BEST THINGS I'VE DONE" SASSOON (Siegfried L., 1886-1967, Poet)

Fine Autograph Letter, unusually signed in full "Siegfried Sassoon" to Sir Ronald STORRS (Sir Ronald, 1881-1955, Orientalist, Governor of Jerusalem), saying that his "postcard adds to my satisfaction about the
wonderful reception 'The Journey' is having from those for whose enjoyment it was written. To provide civilised mental relief from the oppression of things as they are now - that was my purpose. I can only bow my grateful acknowledgements to the audience! At present I am laid low with a very bad attack of bronchial flu, so am not able to be in London for some time. Perhaps in February I may be able to arrange a meeting, which would be a great pleasure. When in town I frequent the Reform, so it should be easy ...", with a postscript that he thinks "the Wilfred Blunt chapter is on of the best things I've done ...", 1 side 8vo., Heytesbury House, Wiltshire headed paper, 4th January

Having started his writing career as a poet, in 1928 Sassoon turned to prose & published Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man, anonymously, though his name appeared in the second impression. His fictionalized autobiography of his early years in Kent, was an immediate success. He continued the story in Memoirs of an Infantry Officer (1930) and Sherston's Progress (1936).
In an Autograph Letter Signed to Marjorie Forster, on the 19th December 1943, Sassoon describes Storrs as "a
noisy bounder", after they both attended a dinner party given by Sassoon's cousin Lady Cholmondeley.
Sybil Rachel Betty Cecile Cholmondeley, Marchioness of Cholmondeley (née Sassoon, 1894-1989) was Chief Staff Officer to Director WRNS, during the second World War. The Sybil Sassoon Gardens at Houghton were opened to the public in 1996.
Siegfried's Journey was written in 1945, after the collapse of Sassoon's marriage. It is an attempt to make sense of the crucial years 1916-1922, though more notable, perhaps for its omissions than its inclusions.
