RUSKIN WRITES TO THE EARL OF SHAFTESBURY
RUSKIN
(John, 1819-1900, Writer and Critic)
Autograph Letter Signed in full to "My dear Lord",
Anthony ASHLEY-COOPER
(7th Earl of Shaftesbury, 1801-1885, Politician, Philanthropist and Social Reformer), saying that "By mischance, the letter with which you honoured me, dated May 18, did not reach me for some days - and since I received it my feeling and thinking time has been short - and I have not been able to say a word of what I wished to say in acknowledgement of it - of which the gist, however, is this - that while entirely glad of your Lordship's encouragement in the action I have taken for defence of animals (action, for the most involving no sacrifice to myself) - it has been a matter of sorrow and surprise to me for many a year - to have received no countenance nor aid from your Lordship in my pleading against the Vivisection of Men. I am always your Lordship's Faithful & respectful Servant ...", 2 sides 8vo., no place, Whit Monday
In 1879, Ruskin resigned from his position as Slade Professor of Art atOxford, but resumed his Professorship in 1883, only to resign again in 1884. He gave his reason as opposition to vivisection, but he had increasingly been in conflict with the University authorities, who refused to expand his Drawing School. He was also suffering from increasingly poor health.
