D'INDY (Vincent, 1851-1931, French Composer)

Autograph Letter Signed 'Vincent d'Indy' to 'Madame', in French with translation, saying that as he is "away from Paris, I do not know at all what the committee has decided for rehearsing the choirs of the Société Nationale, however I believe that Mondays at half-past four will continue ... I will write to those of you who are involved ... as soon as possible", hoping "that you will be kind enough to continue to provide the delightful and precious support of your voice and talent for our little choral performances," 2 sides 8vo., Bayeux, 6th December

D'Indy was a founder of the Société Nationale de Musique, after the war of 1870, and although he himself greatly admired Wagner, its specific aims were to avoid the passion for Italian and German music of the time. Another founder was César Franck, of whom D'Indy was a pupil, friend, helper and biographer, and D'Indy created the Paris Schola Cantorum in 1896 as a complete music school to further Franck's ideals.
