WESTMACOTT-39790-1.jpg
WESTMACOTT (Sir Richard, the Younger, 1799-1872, Sculptor)

Excellent Long Autograph Letter Signed to Nathaniel George PHILIPS  (1795-1831, Artist) saying that the "first persons who should be informed of any change in the motions and circumstances of their friends are those who do not merely pretend but really feel an interest in their concerns, and as I am glad to consider you an earnest well-wisher I take an early opportunity of acquainting you with my establishment in my new Studio. I have now got my building completed, and all my appointments pretty well about me .... I have also the satisfaction of starting with two or three good commissions, that for the Manchester amongst them which from the desire to have as much room as possible ... better for sculpture & therefore makes it even more profitable than I anticipated. Another is a large monumental in memory of the late Bp of Winchester, which will be placed in a good situation in the Cathedral ... I have recently completed my model of the Good Samaritan ... I flatter myself you will all like it ...", he continues with news of his fellow artists, "Wyatt has been thrown from a gig & has broken his thigh, which poor fellow will be a particularly heavy affliction at this season. Eastlake's Exhibition Picture did not make all the impression his last year's work led his friends to hope for it ... I have seen nothing of Lodge for a month ... you express a wish to have a few good casts of that kind if the same man will cast some for you - I do all these things myself ... I need not say how happy I shall be at all times to do anything in that way for you; send me a scratch of the action you want at any time and if I can get a good subject I will forward a cast to you - unless you choose to commission my good taste to provide a few Pounds worth of action for you. There seems however to be a sort of dread of being moulded amongst the ladies ... they ask ruinous prices ... however they are sometimes so beautiful & always so useful that casts from Nature area always worth their price. I hope Mrs Philips as well as yourself have gone through the summer well ...", 4 sides 4to., with the signature on the front page and autograph address and seal, 21 Wilton Place, Hyde Park Corner, 5th August
