SELBORNE (Roundell Palmer, 1812-1895, Lord Chancellor 1872-1874 and 1880-1885, from 1872 1st Baron Selborne, from 1882 1st Earl of)

Autograph letter in the third person, to the Council of the Yorkshire Law Students Union, assuring them "of his great interest in the promotion of Legal Education, in all branches of study, for all ranks of the Legal Profession", however he feels he is unable to advise them on "the feasibility of the particular scheme intended", his own views on "a General School of Law ... in London were frequently before the public some years ago" but "did not receive ... the public and professional encouragement ... necessary", in particular "it has not been possible ... to collect the information" about "what might now be done", his age is against taking up the subject again, but the essential thing will be "the creation of a strong and genuine public opinion" among those "directly concerned", 4 sides 7" x 4½", Blackmoor, Petersfield, 17th October
