(1880-1961, 12th Baronet, Ambassador and Racehorse Owner), supposing "that Tudor Minstrel was disinclined to settle down in the Derby after having been rushed along for the one mile in the Two Thousand" and comparing the higher standard of breeding in France, "the lady (who had tea with us at Ascot) was the Comtesse d'Audiffret-Pasquier", about Darius' photo-finish at Ascot "one must expect, both here and in France, that the 3-year old form is very uncertain", discussing the form of Darius and Acropolis, "What is your opinion of the present day talk of the jockey having to keep the horse back till he thinks fit to make the final challenge, perhaps 2 furlongs away - perhaps more ... Your decision to let Darius stand in England ... will be a great asset to future generations of English bloodstock", in all 9 sides 8vo., Knowsley and Coworth Park, Sunningdale, 12th June 1947 - 8th August [in fact September]

6 Typed Letter Signed 'Yours ever Derby' to Sir Percy Lyham LORAINE ,
(1880-1961, from 1917 12th Baronet, Ambassador and Racehorse Owner), marked 'Confidential' or 'Private', with 2 file copies of letters from Sir Percy to Lord Derby, on international affairs and the turf, "There is no doubt the Windsors are doing very well and are very popular" at Government House in the Bahamas, recently visited by Oliver Stanley as colonial secretary, "I am afraid there is still a good bit of fight left in the people who support Hitler" [in Germany], from Sir Percy with congratulations on Lord Derby's "fourscore years", "Personally I think it is quite wrong of Winston to have gone abroad at such a time as this" (29th January 1946), Sir Percy writes "The Lloyd George budget ... was a flea-bite by comparison with that of Mr Hugh Dalton. The Soviet Exchequer takes 100% death duties ... and provides a reasonable life income for the widow. Mr Dalton proposes to take 75% ... where is taxable wealth to come from? ... the State ... will be the father, school-mistress and paymaster of every citizen ... Less than 2 years before his death ... I went to lunch with Edward Grey at Falloden", recounting Grey's tale about the three Achilles' heels, "Ireland, India and Egypt ... so on the whole I now find horses and racing the most congenial form of escapism", discussing the year's prospects for the Turf (28th April 1946), Lord Derby thanks him, "The Prime Minister [Attlee] himself is rather a good fellow he is surrounded by ... the very worst advisers ... I am debarred by being Lord Lieutenant from taking any part in politics" so that "I really hear nothing except from ... friends like yourself" "Winston is coming here in October, just as a guest, during the time he is attending the meetings in Blackpool ... I have got a fair lot of yearlings this year", besides "Attlee whom I like ... the only other man of consequence is Bevin", "I am sorry to hear about your mare ... I should hope that she will soon give you something worthy to carry your Colours", "I am going racing today at Manchester ... four horses ...
