SAYERS (Dorothy L., 1893-1957, Detective Novelist, Creator of 'Lord Peter Wimsey')

Collection of three Typed Letters signed and an annotated letter to her, to John Cruesmann of Penguin Books concerning his "request for a list of V.I.P.'s to receive complimentary copies of the Inferno. I have made out a list, but am very busy writing little notes to go into certain copies ... Where I have provided no personal note, the books can just go with the Publisher's or Author's compliments, as you prefer. I have included ... persons of importance, of in positions where they can introduce the book to educational circles, etc., ... persons who have given me valuable assistance ... who are entitled to a copy on that account ... do not forget to send a proper number ... to the artist Mr C. W. Scott-Giles ..." and she then asks for "3 dozen copies at Author's price ..." and mentions a couple of newspapers that should have them, 1 side 4to., 31st October, the next letter says that she had forgotten "to raise the question of copies of the Inferno for the Italian Press. Publications like Studi Danteschi should certainly have them. I am writing to an Italian friend who is in close touch with the present-day journalistic world in Italy ...", 1 side oblong 8vo., 2nd November and the final letter saying that she has "now received from my Italian friend the promised list of V.I.P's in Italy and elsewhere who ought to be sent copies ... i have already dealt personally with the Ambassador, whom I met at Cambridge ...", 1 side oblong 8vo., 28th November, together with the letter that she mentionsfrom her friend Signor Ruggero ORLANDO (1907-1994, Italian Journalist and Politician) who says that he thinks "her performances in Italian were very good, and everybody in the section was interested. I actually saw some of those people who work there, and also write for some Italian newspaper, going through the script in order to pinch news and views. There will be no doubt much interest in Italy about the new translation of Dante ..." he goes on to give advice about forms of address in Italy and making suggestions of people who should be sent copies, the letters as been annotated, possibly by DLS, 2 sides folio, Belsize Park, 26th November, all from 24 Newland Street, Witham, Essex on headed paper, all
