UPCOTT (William, 1779-1845, Librarian and Antiquary)

Autograph Letter Signed to an unnamed Correspondent saying that “to a much esteemed friend like yourself, I cannot but inscribe on the first page of this Album some frail memorial of the sentiments with which I regard him. Possibly on turning over its leaves it will remind you, when far removed from us, of those hours of pleasant converse which have now winged themselves away from us, and administer the most agreeable solace of exile and distance by reviewing the recollections which time and absence are too apt, if not to obliterate, at least to impair and diminish. This Book is destined, I conceive, to be the depository of various sentiments from various sources; but the sentiments I am striving to record, are unaffected and sincere, and flowing as directly from the Heart as any of the effusions whether in Poetry or Prose, which may be deemed worthy of a place in your Album. Accept then my warmest wishes for your happiness, mingled with heartfelt vows for your speedy return home (a word which contains within it every blessing that is permitted to us below) to enjoy the verdant landscapes and cool valleys of your native country, in exchange for the scorching gales and rocky soil of the Mauritius...”, with a note in another hand “My home is now ten thousand miles away’ Yet in my thoughts its every image fair Rises us keen, as I still lingered there, And turning me, could all I loved survey...”, 2 sides 8vo., London Institution, 12th June

UTTLEY-41468-1.jpg
UTTLEY (Alice Jane, 1884-1976, Author of the 'Little Grey Rabbit' books)

Fine Typed Letter Signed with Autograph Postscript to Mrs Mackay, saying that when she was in bed the previous night "a book slipped on my bedside table and down fell my small travelling writing case. I picked it up and put back the many papers which had fallen out. I came across various old documents, long forgotten and among them was a letter from you. I do not remember answering it ... I found a note about a letter from your son, Phillip, long ago. I think perhaps you first met my work in Housewife, - you ask me about this -, for one or two stories were taken by Housewife ... I may have been away from home, as it was in this special writing case. I hope you read 'The Swans Fly Over' which came out at Christmas. Another book of essays is written and will come out next autumn or a little later. I wonder if you have any little children now, perhaps they are all grown up. Everything changes so quickly I have to stick to the small changeless delights that I know so well. I have been gardening this afternoon, and that is a pleasure. 'Grey Rabbit finds a Shoe' comes out on the 28th, and I sent an advance copy to the Baby Prince, - which was acclaimed with pleasure by the Queen. It will have to wait until he is old enough to be read to of course . I am glad your children like Owls. I adore them ..." with the postscript that she may have written as "Plough & Harrow rings a bell, but it may be the childhood association ...", 2 sides oblong 8vo., Thackers, Beaconsfield, 21st March

J. de Backer, of Wiesbaden, Germany, in the first, (Typed Letter Signed), Monod replies on Valéry's behalf "about a quotation from François Coppée", but to Valéry's regret, "it is quite impossible to give you the reference you want, particularly in the complete absence of information about the date, etc ... on the letter in question", in the second, (Autograph Letter Signed), Monod explains that "Paul Valéry is away from Paris, and his friends need to respect his quiet" as regards autographs, "But if I can gratify you by sending, on the opposite page, an informal photograph of him, taken in the country, below which you will see his signature, I do so willingly. Monsieur,
My friend Paul Valéry asks me to reply on his behalf to the letter you wrote to him about a quotation from François Coppée. To his regret, it is quite impossible to give you the reference you want, particularly in the complete absence of information about the date, etc ... on the letter in question.
Please be assured, Monsieur, of the expression of my especial regard.

Paris, 27th July 1929
Monsieur,
I have received your letter of the 24th July.
Paul Valéry is away from Paris, and his friends need to respect his quiet. I therefore do not wish to pursue him with requests for autographs. But if I can gratify you by sending, on the opposite page, an informal photograph of him, taken in the country, below which you will see his signature, I do so willingly. You can slip this page into your copy of Charmes.
Please accept, Monsieur, my best regards.
Julien P. Monod
