There is a colony of these gentlemen here and some verge on the farcical ... the War fills all minds and the most noticeable effect is the knitting together of the classes ... Baden-Powell came to us at Hook once so we are interested in Mafeking. I have a good many school-fellows in it ... The general feeling is one of doubt about Buller and full confidence in Roberts. Of deeds done, the medical branch is universally allowed to have come in an easy first ... compared to the continental armies our officers are a lot of gentlemen having a good time. For one hours work done by - say a major - his German colleague puts in twelve, and a Frenchman thirteen. I am pegging away at second-rate fiction ...
