GLADSTONE (William Ewart, 1809-1898, Prime Minister) saying that “in the debate last night when I stated erroneously that you had cheered a certain statement of Mr Rathbone, many of your supporters appeared to think me capable of wilfully misrepresenting you. You were kind enough to disclaim any such inference. Will you permit me to thank you for your generosity and to take the opportunity of expressing my regret if any indiscretions, into which the excitement of debate may have led me, have ever caused you any personal annoyance.
