GORST
(Sir John Eldon, 1861-1911, Minister Plenipotentiary in Cairo, Financial Adviser to the Egyptian Government and promoter of Local Government in Egypt)
Fine Autograph Letter Signed, marked “Private” to W. E. GLADSTONE
(William Ewart, 1809-1898, Prime Minister) saying that “in the debate last night when I stated erroneously that you had cheered a certain statement of Mr Rathbone, many of your supporters appeared to think me capable of wilfully misrepresenting you. You were kind enough to disclaim any such inference. Will you permit me to thank you for your generosity and to take the opportunity of expressing my regret if any indiscretions, into which the excitement of debate may have led me, have ever caused you any personal annoyance. I hope that you will believe that I am incapable of ever behaving intentionally towards you otherwise than in accordance with the profound admiration and respect with which I regard you...”, 3 sides 8vo., House of Commons headed paper, 26th July
