SAYERS
(Dorothy L., 1893-1957, Detective Novelist, Creator of ‘Lord Peter Wimsey’)
Fine Typed Letter signed to Dennis WHEATLEY
(1897-1977, Novelist) thanking him for “the copy of MURDER OFF MIAMI, which looks most entertaining. Many years ago I had a dim notion of writing a story something like this, but felt I could not cope with the difficulty of getting all the material together. I congratulate you on having produced this unique volume, which I shall study with great interest. It is very kind of you to invite me to your cocktail party... I do not know whether I shall be able to get up to Town... so may I leave it open...”, 1 side A4, 24 Newland Street, Witham, Essex headed paper, 16th July

“I DO NOT WANT PETER TO APPEAR EVEN MORE OF AN INTELLECTUAL PRIG AND A PEDANT THAN HE ACTUALLY IS....”
SAYERS
(Dorothy L., 1893-1957, Detective Novelist, Creator of ‘Lord Peter Wimsey’)
Fine Typed Letter signed to Michael MacOWAN
(1906-1980, Actor and Director) saying that he has “looked the thing up in Wyld, and so far as I can see you are quite right about the pronunciation of Donne. The past particle ‘done’ was apparently already pronounced ‘dun’ by the end of the 16th century. The tendency nowadays seems to be for the ordinary man to pronounce according to the spelling, and I left it like this since I do not want Peter to appear even more of an intellectual prig and pedant than he actually is! Nor did I want another long academic wrangle with Mr Arundell; but if your people pronounce it happily in the 17th century way I should not interfere with them, since you are perfectly correct...”, 1 side oblong 8vo., 24 Newland Street, Witham, Essex, headed paper, 29th November

SAYERS
(Dorothy L., 1893-1957, Detective Novelist, Creator of 'Lord Peter Wimsey')
Collection of three Typed Letters signed and an annotated letter to her, to John Cruesmann of Penguin Books
concerning his "request for a list of V.I.P.'s to receive complimentary copies of the Inferno. I have made out a list, but am very busy writing little notes to go into certain copies ... Where I have provided no personal note, the books can just go with the Publisher's or Author's compliments, as you prefer. I have included ... persons of importance, of in positions where they can introduce the book to educational circles, etc., ... persons who have given me valuable assistance ... who are entitled to a copy on that account ... do not forget to send a proper number ... to the artist Mr C. W. Scott-Giles ..." and she then asks for "3 dozen copies at Author's price ..." and mentions a couple of newspapers that should have them, 1 side 4to., 31st October, the next letter says that she had forgotten "to raise the question of copies of the Inferno for the Italian Press. Publications like Studi Danteschi should certainly have them. I am writing to an Italian friend who is in close touch with the present-day journalistic world in Italy ...", 1 side oblong 8vo., 2nd November and the final letter saying that she has "now received from my Italian friend the promised list of V.I.P's in Italy and elsewhere who ought to be sent copies ... i have already dealt personally with the Ambassador, whom I met at Cambridge ...", 1 side oblong 8vo., 28th November, together with the letter that she mentionsfrom her friend Signor Ruggero ORLANDO (1907-1994, Italian Journalist and Politician) who says that he thinks "her performances in Italian were very good, and everybody in the section was interested. I actually saw some of those people who work there, and also write for some Italian newspaper, going through the script in order to pinch news and views. There will be no doubt much interest in Italy about the new translation of Dante ..." he goes on to give advice about forms of address in Italy and making suggestions of people who should be sent copies, the letters as been annotated, possibly by DLS, 2 sides folio, Belsize Park, 26th November, all from 24 Newland Street, Witham, Essex on headed paper, all

(Dorothy L., 1893-1957, Detective Novelist, Creator of 'Lord Peter Wimsey')
Fine Typed Letter signed to Eric Swift
saying that to the best of her "knowledge and belief, the London Dante Society has withered away. I think the Oxford Branch of it still exists, but I am not very sure even of that. It does not seem to have done or published anything for some time. Possibly you might get into touch with it through Miss Barbara Reynolds ... from whom I last had news of it ...", 1 side oblong 8vo., 24 Newland Street, Witham, Essex, 8th July

(born 1980, Estonian art historian , lecturer and translator) saying that he is "so glad that you have liked my performances on film,. I would have also liked you to see plays I have been in, in the theatre. Actually I love playing 'Uncle Vanya', & of course I was not at all Russian but hope that I played the character as Chekhov would have liked.
