telling him that he "saw your friend Mr Marsden, he has a good invention for the Mercantile Marine but not applicable to the Navy. I have told him this. I imagine that it would be somewhat difficult to introduce it into the Mercantile Marine, as most of the Companies would say that it was an invention for settling a dispute over a collision and they regarded collisions as only a remote possibility. There is also a possibility of Captain, Engineer & helmsman veering to a different story than the instrument reported.
