ROBBINS
(Lionel, 1898-1984, Professor of Economics at the LSE 1929-1961, Life Peer)
Remarkable letter to Lord Waverley
(Sir John Anderson, 1882-1958, war-time Chancellor of the Exchequer), expressing his "sympathy and indignation at the infamous treatment you have received from the Socialists - including by omission the late Prime Minister [Attlee] ... I am disgusted with Gaitskell [Hugh, leader of the Labour Party 1955-1963] who was a pupil of mine [at New College, Oxford] and a friend of long standing", he sends a copy of his letter to Gaitskell (present) "which I have no doubt will end that relationship. These people will reduce everything to a common degradation if no protest is made" (2nd March 1952), to Gaitskell he writes "I know the victim of your shabby triumph ... During the war I watched him settling disputes between ministers of all parties ... Since the abolition of the University Franchise ... he has refused safe conservative seats on the ground that as a public servant he received confidences which he would not ... had it ever been thought that he would ever fight on a party ticket ... Are only mediocrities who have no views on anything, henceforward, to be in charge of our public inquiries? Is the stuffed shirt their idea of the just man made perfect?", with further scathing comments, " 'Ne'er look ... the eagles are gone; crows and daws, crows and daws ...' Yours with very deep regret", 2 sides 8vo and 2 sides folio, 10 Meadway Close, N.W.11, 1st - 2nd March
