BADEN-POWELL-38485-1.jpg
BADEN-POWELL (Lady Olave, 1889-1977, World Chief Guide, Chief Commissioner for the Girl Guides, wife of Sir Robert)

Excellent Typed Letter Signed signed to Mrs Dickson mared "Private and Confidential" with a note that it is "(a SECRET I mean between you and me, and not for my niece to be told of!!)" thanking her for having her niece "a stranger ... to stay with you this month, and for these weeks whilst she has to be in Edinburgh. It is just MOST comforting to feel that she will be in kindly sympathetic hands ... during what is bound to be a trying time. I am so fond of her ..." and asking her for "another 'good turn'. I know that IT IS rather nice, when you are feeling ill (not that I have ever BEEN ill! - but I have seen others in Nursing Homes!!) to have FLOWERS which mean kind thoughts from friends ..." and so she is sending a cheque with the request that she could "ask a florist to send along a little bunch ... and then perhaps after a few days a few more fresh ones ... May I just leave this in your hands as I am just flying off (literally) tomorrow to Switzerland ... I shall hear no doubt in due course how the operation goes off, from my daughter ... I do hope that her hearing will be restored ...", 2 sides 4to., Hampton Court Palace, East Molesley, 2nd November

I am deeply grateful for your united kind wishes to my husband & myself - and of course, still more for the sweet poetic expression of thoughts & feelings sent us by Mr Paxton Hood", the Revd. Dear Mr and Mrs Hood,
Although it would have been a great delight to have shaken hands with you on Saturday - yet, as that could not be I am deeply grateful for your united kind wishes to my husband & myself - and of course, still more for the sweet [Side 2] poetic expression of thoughts & feelings sent us by Mr Paxton Hood. It is 37 years since I heard my old friend - a mere youth then - with all the glow of youthful eloquence speak for what I deemed the right. I bless God for him, & with him, that through all the changing scenes of life - his work has been earnest, and blessed.
[Side 3] We have crossed each others path at Studley, at Ebley [Gloucestershire] - dear Ebley! in Cornwall - & elsewhere, in the long track of years - I can truly say I have even had a tear for his sorrows, and a throb of delight for his joys - & sincere admiration of his genius. [Side 4] My husband unites with me in all kindly wishes that you both may have many many happy years before you & that your path "may shine more & more unto the perfect day".
Faithfully Yours
Clara Lucas Balfour
PS I am staying a few days at my daughters Mrs D Burns.
