FROUDE-41968-1.jpg
FROUDE (James Anthony, 1818-1894, Historian)

Long Autograph Letter Signed to Martin saying he has unwillingly “left your note too long unanswered. I liked the verses well - if not very well. I wanted a second opinion so I sent them to Allingham - who as you know is now helping me with the Magazine. I have had no answer from him, so you must kindly make my apologies to the lady. In all likelihood the MS is gone to the Press. I shall know in a day or two. I publish so little Poetry... when I make an exception it is exceptionally criticised. I hope you have better weather than we have, after two more protactedly lovely summers... the storms have settled down upon us & wind & rain & waves are trying their worse to wash away the Peninsula on which we are living. If we survive we shall be in London in 3 weeks... It is our last season here...” he continues about his landlord taking the property back for himself and his bride, explaining the problems with the property and saying that “after a season I expect he will invite us to return. A thousand thanks for the Horace, which however I fear is waiting for me in Onslow Gardens...”, signed on the first page, 4 sides 8vo., Kinnare, 20th October no year
