HUNT
(William Holman, 1827-1910, Pre-Raphaelite Painter)
Fine Autograph Letter Signed 'W. Holman Hunt' to an unnamed correspondent
apologising for his date reply to his invitation to a banquet "in commemoration of Shakespeare. I have caught a bad cold and the doctors have had me in hand and still prevent me from regarding myself as a free agent, or I should ... have hastened to say how proud I should be to accept it. As it is I fear that the uncertainty about my condition would make it wrong for me to engage a place on an occasion when so many will desire to be present, but if in the course of a few days my physician's better assurances are confirmed I will write again to learn whether there is any possibility of coming in to fill a chair that chance may leave vacant for I should be sorry to give up the hope altogether till the last arrangements are concluded by the Urban Club for the forthcoming anniversary of our grandest Englishman ....", 2 sides 8vo., Draycott Lodge, 8th April

(Rev. Selwyn, 1849-1930, Slade Professor of Fine Art, Oxford, 1910-1916)
Autograph Letter Signed to Dewar
saying that he can’t tell him “how touched and delighted we both are by your kindness. What a beautiful book! What a beautiful edition! what a beautiful inscription! Again I can only say we are more pleased than I can tell - and with the inscription not least of all. Thank you most heartily. Surely the volume is a rare one? The Farmer’s Boy I know and possess. But I am ashamed to say that of this book I never heard. And how delightful it is! It reached us on Thursday night - but I delayed writing till we had both read it through. And we are both most charmed with it. It is a book everyway after our own hearts. I hope both you and Mrs Dewar have kept well during this tryig winter - which with its plague of Influenza has laid so many of us low - myself amongst the number. But thanks to the lavish care bestowed on me I’m now quite recovered. Again with our united thanks and kindest remembrances...”, 2 sides 8vo., 20 Fitzroy Street, 24th February
