sending her the address of a place in Bath where they could stay, “there were two bedrooms & servants rooms & a sitting room ordered - then since that, today has been ordered a bedroom & a maids room. Please impress on the maid that she must not say its the Lord & Lady Archibald Campbell, if any questions are asked are coming, otherwise say nothing. I shall arrive at 1.30... please impress on the maid all the same. I can send carriage for you from K.P. & then you pick up maid if that suits you, or you come to K. Pce & then my servant takes on yr luggage with what there is of the maids... Miss Hubert is the maid. Keep her in her place in some ways she is very nice but she’s been a trouble & suffers from a serious malady called curiosity. I hope this will do, at any rate I will send William Footman to see you tomorrow... Excuse scribble chattering all the time & I can’t write properly...”, 7 sides 8vo., no place, no date

I’ve been so worried by the S.S.H.S. messing up the S.S.F.A. in Scotland behind my back! Private. now Lady Jane has turned out (George disturbed) to be not true, & her daughter worse it’s an awful go. But I hope to master her & keep her too but she’s kicking, & making herself most unpleasant & acting anything but what I shd have expected - not the Lady! Burn this please at once. inviting her and Ben “to come to my performance on Friday & go with us... The Pss of W is entirely to blame for all this row & I cannot get her to see it - & all the blame comes on me. What I feel most is the cruelty it is to the men in the front - they will read all this - I have already received two letters from men with these. One a touching one. I am miserable about it. I find privately from our conversations & letters that the Pss has been dabling herself behind our backs in my County & does not wish to retract & thus much harm has come & Mrs Sty Clarke is doing mischief...” with a postscript asking about her mother and then “I hold to Ladysmith & believe the Boers will have to leave to be used elsewhere...”, 4 sides 8vo., with original autograph envelope, Kensington Palace, 21st February
