MARCHESI
(Blanche, 1863-1940, Soprano concert singer)
Fine Autograph Letter in French with translation signed to Frank SCHUSTER
(1852-1927, the musical society host) saying “What a shame! We’ll eat with a tear in our left eye, thinking of the absent one. The happy absent who breathes that fresh St. Moritz air! But I don’t want to complain too much. Here, in my new apartment, I’m like in the countryside and I find the air exquisite. It’s a bit far away. But if I died on Cambridge Terrace, no one would wake me up. So, we’ll take cabs, and I’ll have regained my health. I’m giving my first morning class with students on March 6th. Will you be back? I’m very upset with Miss Dale. I shout my head off to open her mind and give her serious direction and a substantial repertoire. She sings Queen’s Hall at the first good opportunity, a song she’s been warbling along to for three years. Orpheus and his Lute by... Arthur Sullivan. What can I do! Lack of ambition, laziness, and flattery from friends prevent many good people from becoming true artists. I’m going to tell her I’ll drop her if she doesn’t work. It’s like Miss Wilson. All she thinks about is skating. What can you do! If youth only knew! I’m extremely happy to hear a good song. I love Fauré’s music. I have some very serious things in my notebooks; if you like, we’ll have a look at all of that together one day. What about a morning of nothing but “musical curiosities”; for connoisseurs? What an amusing title and what fun for true lovers of beauty...”, 4 sides oblong 8vo., 22 Greville Place, Maida Vale, Friday, no date
