Typed Letter Signed to 'Dear Sergeant Thwaites'
thanking him for sending "a copy of your drawing of the cast of 'Desert Highway'. One or two of them - especially 'Knocker' are very good indeed. PRIESTLEY
(John Boynton, 1894-1984, Dramatist, Novelist and Critic)
Fine Typed Letter Signed to David SELF
(1941-2008, Teacher, Writer and Broadcaster), saying "There is no 'presumption' in your writing to me", but explaining he is "just beginning a biggish and rather difficult book (on the Edwardians)" and talking of "odd jobs that take valuable time and energy. However, here goes: I like many of the contributions ... because they seem to me to be sincere ... not saying what they feel they ought to say, but ... saying what they think. I hope they will do this all their lives, so long as they are not deliberately hurting somebody's feelimgs", he comments that "More and more novels, plays, films, T.V. documentary programmes seem to me to be ruined because ... shapeless ... as if the very idea of proper structure is disappearing from the world ... But I do hope that if some of your pupils become writers they will remedy this", 1 side 10" x 8", Kissing Tree House, Alveston, Stratford-on-Avon, 1st May
