BARNETT (John Francis, 1837-1916, Pianist, Composer and Professor at the Royal Academy of Music)

Autograph letter signed to 'Dear Sir', saying he is "glad to hear you are going to do the 'Ancient Mariner' at your Society" and that "the best way to manage, where all the [orchestral] parts are not represented, is to have an Harmonium", Barnett explains how the published harmonium part "would require ... great discretion", with pertinent examples, "I should prefer drums to a Trombone because you cannot imitate the tone of drums by any other instrument ... A trumpet would be better than a trombone where only one instrument can be obtained", with other helpful comments on priorities, 3 sides 8vo, 8 Marlborough Place, St John's Wood, London, 28th September faint traces of laying down at top of blank second side
