BENNETT (Arnold, 1867-1931, Poet and Novelist)

Fine Autograph Letter Signed in full to Mr Wood thanking him for his letter and saying that he was "certainly under the impression that you did not wish to pay any fee at all. I think that you had now better make me an offer. I certainly do not want a high fee, but some fee I must have. I am entirely with you in your non-financial aim; but I do not think that the publisher's profits are quite so problematical as you seem to think ...", 1 side 4to., 75 Cadogan Square, 2nd October

BENNETT (Arnold, 1867-1931, Poet and Novelist)

Fine Autograph Letter Signed in full to Haslam MILLS (1873-1930, Journalist and Author) returning " the instalment of the book on Sir Charles Macara and Manchester..." (1845-1929,1st Baronet, Cotton Spinner), he continues that he sees "no objection to the elaboration of the background of the portrait. In fact I wish that our biographers in general would work more on the lines which you have taken. Most biographies fail to provide any living background for the portraits. This answers the specific question which you put to me. I may add that in my opinion the appeal of a biography & therefore its circulation, is necessarily widened in proportion to the width of its outlook. Of course your scheme need not, and should not prevent an adequate disclosure of personal biographical detail ...", he continues about the pleasure of seeing him "again after such a long time, but why you should suppose that I should not remember you, after our days in Manchester, I cannot imagine ...", 2 sides 4to., Comarque, Thorpe-Le-Soken, 7th June

BENNETT (Arnold, 1867-1931, Poet and Novelist)

Autograph Letter Signed in full to "My dear Mills" telling him that "all that this agreeable lecture wants to make it saleable is a famous signature. Without that, I doubt if you will place it in London, as it doesn't deal with people, things that Londoners know ... no-one is less known in London than the members of the 'Times' Staff. I think it is very nice, but I think also it lacks importance. Arm's Politics, it is excellent journalism and no adverse criticism can be made on it. The other thing is too slight to be criticised. If I am to animadvert, I can only say in belittlement that all this stuff has some slight lack of the excessively adroit facility of 'miscellany' ...", he ends by sending good wishes to his wife and offering to entertain them in New York, 2 sides 8vo., Hotel Californie, Cannes, 18th June faded with loss of some text, worn at folds and repaired

BENSON (Edward Frederick, 1867-1940, Novelist & Scholar, Author of ‘Mapp & Lucia’)

Small Archive of Six Autograph Letters Signed to Ronald Riggs (’R.R.’, ‘Mr Riggs’ and ‘Ronald’) the first saying that “Bournemouth seems to be a very lively p lace, & if I ha time I would certainly come down to see the Alderman & perhaps borrow one of his ships for a bathe. Let me hear more of his doings sometime; perhaps he lends himself to what may be called ‘literary treatment’. I’m sorry you’ve given up writing; does other work interferre with it? Or tennis? Off in a few days to Rye when I shall have a great deal of work to do, & also I hope sun-bathe in. my watered garden. Excuse the scrappiness of this!...”, 2 sides 8vo., 25 Brompton Square headed paper, 31st May 1932, the next says he has “just disinterred a letter of yours that I’m afraid was written weeks ago, & there’s the photograph for which you held out hope? I haven’t seen it. There’s a very silly book of verse just out, but the reviews say it’s flippant, when I though it profound and edifying and all the rest of it... And there’s a gale sweeping across my garden, & it’s cold, and so I lit a. firer & must now go and dress for dinner. And yesterday I was sun-bathing & found it almost too hot...”, 2 sides 8vo., Lamb House, Rye headed paper, 24th July 1932, the third returns “the photograph you sent me, you look a very happy party & I hope you had a pleasant bath before or after or perhaps both. But telephoning - I am the worst telephoner in the world for I never can think of anything to say & you would sit before the instrument only to receive the information that it is hot (or probably cold)...”, 2 sides 8vo., Brompton Square headed paper, 10th December 1883, the fourth congratulates him “upon getting into print; c’est le premier pas qui conte. Now you’ve got to make good your first step, & put the second down solidly. Your first note about the motor-coach is quite a good item & I like Mr Lewis’s glass music stool (only it ought to be chameleon). Go on with picturesque things...”, 2 sides 8vo., Lamb House headed, 6th May 1934, the fist encloses his “cuttings, which I read with renewed admiration for people who can tell me All About It in a few lines,. But I should have liked to hear more of Kate...”, 2 sides 8vo., Lamb House headed, 5th July 1935 and the final letter is “Delighted to hear that you have expanded - Remember to be always slightly indiscreet; that is what those who read like and it is more fun. No; no sun yet at Rye but I’m told that the moon is all right...”, 2 sides 8vo.,Lamb House headed, 1st March
