VINCENT (Henry, 1813-1878, Chartist and Political Agitator)

Autograph quotation signed and dated "In the cause of political freedom, Right heartily yours", on piece, laid down, Oundle, 15th March laid down

In May 1839 Vincent attended a Chartist assemblage in Newport and was committed to prison, but the outcry was so great that the Mayor of Monmouth had to read the Riot Act. The same year in November between 8 and 20 thousand Welsh miners marched on Newport, one of their objects being Vincent's release. Vincent had a long career as a public lecturer.
