HENCKEL VON DONNERSMARCK
(Count Wilhelm Ludwig Victor, 1775-1849, Knight of St. John, Prussian Lieutenant-General)
Document in German with translation, signed 'W Henckel von Donnersmarck, Major and Squadron Commander of the Gardes du Corps',
to the Royal Immediate Service Commission, at the "Local Royal Residence", advising that "tomorrow I will be leaving my army accommodation at No. 6 Brandenburg Gate, in the House of Herr Siburg's Heirs, and will be taking up rented quarters in No. 42 Französische Strasse belonging to Privy Councillor Unger", and asking them "1. to let me know from today the allowances due to me as Major and Squadron Commander, and 2. to arrange for me to have the allowances due to me for wood and candles", with marginal notes of 10th and 11th January, "show this to Bärsel and Alexander", "the removal only is noted", but referring the question of the wood, signed 'Baersel. Voigt. Pagès', and "accordingly return to Major Henkel in answer", 1 side folio, Berlin, 9th January
Prussia at this time had suffered the loss of her western territory to Napoleon, and her eastern to Russia. Later this year Friedrich Wilhelm III made Henckel his ADC, and sent him on a mission to Paris to felicitate Napoleon on his second marriage. With Napoleon's retreat from Moscow, however, the war of liberation began, culminating in the battle of Leipzig (1813).
