DOVER (1st Baron, George James Welbore Agar-Ellis, 1797-1833, F. R. S.)

Autograph Letter Signed 'G. Agar Ellis' to T. Coates at 29 Percy Street, Rathbone Place, saying "The enclosed was sent under cover to me ... his remarks are not without some justness in them", 1 side 8vo., address and seal on verso, Spring Garden[s], 5th March slight charring during sealing, small piece held by seal on opening

Agar-Ellis, only son of the 2nd Viscount Clifden, was elected FRS and FSA in 1816 at the age of 19. Lady Granville described him as 'gentlemanlike and sensible, with a care-worn, expressive, Spencer face' who 'gains upon being known and is very agreeable' with an 'uncomparable sweetness of temper' in spite of his wretched health. It was he who suggested the purchase of the Angerstein collection as the nucleus of the National Gallery, of which he became a Trustee.
