HOLLINGSHEAD (John, 1827-1904, Theatre Manager and Journalist)

Autograph Letter Signed to Dear Madam (Ellen, Mrs Charles Kean, née Tree, 1805-1880), introducing Mr Edward Levy, and suggesting the revival of three plays in the versions formerly put on at the Princess' theatre "performed with so much success by the late Mr Charles Kean, with Mr Alfred Wigan in the principal characters": 'Pauline', 'The Courier of Lyons', and 'Louis XI', 2 sides 8vo., Gaiety Theatre, Strand, 23rd August slight split at foot of fold

Hollingshead opened the Gaiety which he managed from 1868 to 1886. He introduced matinée performances and was the first manager to use electric light both inside and outside the theatre. In 1880 he staged Ibsen's 'Pillars of Society' which was the first Ibsen play seen in London.
