LANG (Anton, 1875-1938, Played the part of Christ at Oberammergau 1900-1922)

Autograph Postcard Signed in German with translation, to William B.A. Wynyard, thanking him for his letter and for the photograph of the Queen and her autograph, "I have been back here from my trip to Rome for two days and am glad to be home", fine view of Milan Cathedral on verso, Oberammergau, Bavaria, 10th November light browning at one edge

Lang worked at the family pottery run by his father Rochus Lang (d.1934). Anton played 'Christ' in 1900, 1910 and 1922, and 'Prologue' in 1930 and 1934. In 1901 he was the guest in England of the Misses Milner, where he met again Mathilde Rutz of Oberammergau, and whom he married in 1902. Like other villagers they entertained many foreign visitors, including the future pope in 1922. With his fellow Oberammergauers he toured America in 1923-1924 to promote the village's wood carving and pottery in hard currency - the home market had collapsed from inflation. Anton was responsible for refusing an offer of over $1,000,000 for the right to film the Passion Play. See his 'Reminiscences' (German and English editions, Munich, 1938).
