Scoles devoted himself between 1822 and 1826 to archaeological and architectural research in Rome, Greece, Egypt and Syria, reflected in his papers to the R.I.B.A., of which he became vice-president 1857-1858. In 1819 his design for St. Luke's Chelsea was chosen from among 40 others. As Architect to the Society of the Middle Temple, he erected the clock tower to Plowden Buildings, and in 1840 began the restoration of the Temple Church.
