ZUMPT (Karl Gottlob, 1792-1849, German Classical Scholar)

Unsigned autograph address panel, to "Dr. Leonard Schmitz", 1(809-1890), "Rector of the high-school Edinburgh", laid down with a note 'was nearly blind when he wrote this direction', postmarked Berlin, British postmark 24th April

Leonhard Schmitz did great service by translating the most recent German classical scholarship into English, particularly Roman History from a modern viewpoint. Naturalized in 1837, he was appointed Rector of Edinburgh High School in December 1845, staying there over twenty years. He immediately translated Zumpt's Latin Grammar for the school's use, a version taken up in America by Charles Anthon. He and Zumpt continued to collaborate in a series of textbooks for Messrs W. & R. Chambers. The Prince of Wales, later Edward VII, studied history with him while he stayed in Edinburgh in 1859.
