Lord William served gallantly at Copenhagen and in the Peninsula, was ADC to Wellington in 1812, and again in 1817 when the latter was Ambassador to Paris. An elder brother of Lord John Russell, to whom he was devoted, he was son, brother and father to successive Dukes of Bedford, as well as father to Odo Russell, the diplomat Baron Ampthill.
