Masters lectured on botany at St. George's Medical School, 1855-1868, and published his researches in 'Vegetable Teratology', 1869. He edited the 'Gardeners' Chronicle', was an active suppporter of the RHS, and wrote treatises on elementary botany. Bennett was lecturer in botany at Bedford College and St. Thomas' Hospital. He translated and edited Justus Sachs' 'Lehrbuch der Botanik', 1875, and collaborated on 'Handbook of Cryptogamic Botany', 1889.
