Currey was Secretary to the Linnaean Society 1860-1880 and Vice-President 1880-1881. He was a member of the council of the Royal Society. His collection of fungi was left to the Kew Herbarium and the genus Curreya was founded in his memory. He translated Hofmeister's 'On the Germination of the Higher Cryptogamia', 1862, and was editor of the Natural History Review from 1861. Bennett translated and edited Julius Sachs' 'Lehrbuch der Botanik' , 1875, and collaborated on 'Handbook of Cryptogamic Botany', 1889.
