Letter in Portuguese with translation, signed 'The Queen', to Lucien, Cardinal BONAPARTE, (1828-1895, grandson of Napoleon I's brother Lucien, and 4th Prince of Canino), lithographed with the Cardinal's surname and the place and date completed by hand, beginning with her titles "Dona Maria Amelia d'Orleans, By the Grace of God, Queen of Portugal and of the Algarves, of the Nearer and Further Sea, in Africa Lady of Guinea, and of the Conquest, Navigation, and Commerce of Ethiopia, Arabia, Persia, and India etc.", and thanking him for "Your Eminence's Letter ... on the occasion of the festival of the Most Holy Nativity, and greatly obliged by your expressions of devotion, I beg Your Eminence to be assured of my lively thanks and of my sincere desire to be able to do you favour ... May Our Lord keep your person in His Holy Care", 1 side folio, address on conjugate leaf, Palace of Belem, 23rd January tear in right margin touching two letters without loss, traces of papered seal on address side

Dona Amelia was born in Twickenham, daughter of Prince Louis Philippe, the Orleanist claimant to the French throne. In 1909 she narrowly escaped when riding with her husband and her two sons, her husband and the Crown Prince being killed by an assassin.
