DECAZES (Élie, 1780-1860, French Statesman, Duc)

Autograph letter signed to 'My dear Sir' (this in English), the rest of the letter in French with translation, asking his correspondent to oblige him "by putting the enclosed letter into the hands of the Duchesse de Sagan", (Dorothée, 1793-1862, daughter of the Duke of Courland in the Baltic, and who married Talleyrand's nephew in 1809), and to lay his homage "at Milady's feet with my wishes for her safe journey", with a biographical note signed 'V. Fox Novr. 1852' at the foot of the first three sides, Fox has also added the year to the letter, 1 side 8vo., Paris, 'Wednesday evening',no date,

The young Decazes was a magistrate in the South-West of France, then moved to Paris. Immediately after Waterloo, as Captain of a Company of the National Guard, he seized and closed the Palais-Bourbon (8th July 1815), thus ending the Provisional Government's opposition to Louis XVIII's return. When the Duc de Richelieu retired as Chief Minister in 1818, Decazes formed a new ministry with General Dessolle as nominal president, and himself as Minister of the Interior and Police. In the outcry following the assassination of the King's nephew, the Duc de Berri (13th February 1820), he had to resign and was sent by Louis XVIII as ambassador to England (1820-1821).
