Autograph Letter Signed to Major Johnson, thanking him for his letter "of this day & accompanying Testimonials ... for employment in Ireland: but I should not act a friends part if I did not ... state that I know no likelihood of any occasion arising, on which His Excellency would have it in his power", in general "employment is given by promotion", and when not, "there are so many Candidates who have claims from previous service in & acquaintance with Ireland ... that I fear I cannot reasonably encourage you", 3 sides 8vo., Irish Office, Whitehall, 8th January

Cardwell was President of the Board of Trade under Lord Aberdeen, 1852-1855, Secretary for Ireland under Lord Palmerston, 1859-1861, and for the Colonies 1864-1866.
As Secretary for War under Gladstone, Cardwell abolished the purchase of commissions and reorganised the grouping and names of the regiments.
