COLONSAY AND ORONSAY (Sir Duncan M'Neill, M.P., 1793-1874, Scottish Judge, from 1867 1st Baron)

Autograph Letter Signed 'Dun. M'. Neill' to William Mure (of Caldwell, 1799-1860, Deputy Lieutenant for Renfrewshire), saying "Your letter ... bearing the Beith [Ayrshire] Postmark of the 20th did not reach me till after I had seen your communication to Sir James Graham", (Bart., 1792-1861, Peel's Home Secretary 1841-1846), and acknowledging his letter "of the 24th from Eton", he says that Sir James "is also impressed with the importance" of his views, which are "as have been discussed verbally between Sir James and myself", the writer's "official Chambers are at Gwydyr House and I am there all forenoon" except possibly for short visits to the Lords or the Public Offices, he intends "to go to Scotland next week", 4 sides 8vo., Gwydyr House, Whitehall, 6th May

Sir Duncan was M.P. for Argyllshire, 1843-1851, and Lord Advocate for Scotland 1842-1846.
Sir James incurred considerable odium in Scotland over the legal rights of State courts in Church matters, and over the right of patrons to 'intrude' ministers, which led to the Disruption of 1843.
