Dilke was Radical M.P. for Chelsea, 1868-1886, when his affair with Mrs. Crawford helped to bring down the Liberal Government. He returned to public life in 1892 as M.P. for the Forest of Dean, and helped to organize the Labour M.P.s into an effective force. Dilke left important bequests to the National Portrait Gallery
