HARTLEY (James, of Leicester)

Autograph Letter Signed to Alfred Ellis, 1821-1879, second son of John Ellis (Chairman of the Midland Railway), of Belgrave, Leicestershire, saying "My medical advisers have just been here ... I suppose I must obey virtually their instructions, and take freely 'Brandy' ... to enable me to overcome the encroachments of water, and the certitude of aqueous humour centered in my limbs ... consequently you must not expect to have me for a companion at the 'Brande' ", he wishes him well on his tour of Scotland, "What would I not give to hear once more the long drawn whistle or revallie of the Golden Plover - the plaint of the Curlew - and the hardy accents of the Brown Ptarmigan" and exhorting him "to catch the spirit of Him who failed not to notice the beautiful tracery, and exquisite finish of the lily of the field", 4 sides 8vo., Leicester, 31st July
