Autograph Letter Signed to Alfred Ellis, (1821-1879, second son of John Ellis, Chairman of the Midland Railway), of Belgrave, Leicestershire, regretting that "the 'Wallace Oak' ... was blown down during the tremendous storm ... on the evening & morning of 6th & 7th of February 1856 ... It had long been in a dying state - for a number of years it had had very little foliage", the writer "was anxious to have had some of it budded or grafted, but delayed till too late ... I think ... there is some of its progeny on the estate", 2 sides, Elderslie House, Renfrewshire, 12th October

Elderslie, 2 miles west of Paisley, is the traditional birthplace of Sir William Wallace, 1270-1305, the patriot and 'Knight of Elderslie'.
