KENYON (Sir Frederic George, 1863-1952, Classical Scholar and Director of the British Museum 1909-1930)

Autograph Letter Signed to John William Mackail, 1859-1945, saying "The enclosed [not present] is a draft scheme for the standardisation of critical signs in editions of the classics drawn up by a small sub-committee of the Union Académique Internationale ... for consideration at the next meeting of the Union in May", copies have gone for example, to the "Oxford Texts and the Budé Society; a batch has been sent to me to communicate to the Academy", and asking if it had best go "to the members of Section VI (or a selection of them) ... our representatives at the U.A.I. will be expected to have some opinions", with eight names added by Mackail, 2 sides 8vo., British Museum, W.C.1, on British Academy paper, 17th December

Sir Frederic was a devoted textual critic even as a schoolboy, and published the newly-discovered Constitution of Athens of Aristotle in 1891.
Mackail edited Vergil and was elected Professor of Poetry at Oxford in 1906. He married Burne-Jones' daughter Margaret, wrote the life of William Morris and was the father of Angela Thirkell.
The eight names are all Fellows of the British Academy and include T. W. Allen, b.1862, who wrote on the Homeric Scholia and 15th century Greek Abbreviations for the Academy, A.C. Clark, the Cicero scholar and President of the Classical Association 1930-1931, Gilbert Murray, 1866-1957, and Alexander Souter, 1873-1949, editor of the Greek New Testament.
