PASQUIER (Étienne Denis, 1767-1862, French Statesman, Duke)

Autograph note in French with translation, signed, to 'Mesdemoiselles', sending "the famous yellow Novel" which "can be read even when one has a cold, it has the merit of very large print", and asking "Does your compassion for a poor man coughing by his fire side go as far as lending him a volume of the History of Rome that he saw on your table?", 1 side small 8vo., 'Saturday morning' no date, c.

Pasquier was a moderate reformer and was imprisoned during the Terror. Napoleon made him Prefect of Police, 1810-1814. He held office under Louis XVIII but could not work with the extreme royalists, and found his niche as President of the Chamber of Peers for the whole of Louis Philippe's reign. His memoirs give a valuable picture of the old Parlement de Paris, of which he was a counsellor, at the time of the Revolution.
