SEAMAN (Sir Owen, 1861-1936, Poet and Satyrist, Editor of Punch)

Autograph Letter Signed to George Roland Halkett, (1855-1918, artist and journalist) saying that he "will not suspect me ... of wishing to impose my work upon you and the National Union [of Journalists], or of pretending to be an artist, but I feel that my poem ... must be taken as a whole ... I would much sooner it did not appear in so important a publication with all the connecting links (in what is at worst a logical production) taken away", but if there is no alternative, "you do not need my permission ... though I appreciate your courtesy in asking for it", 1 side 4to., 'Punch' Office, 10 Bouverie Street, E.C., 29th May upper half neatly laid down

Halkett contributed many drawings to Punch, but was equally interested in politics. His 'The Irish Green Book', 1887, had an enormous circulation during the Home rule controversy. In 1892 he was appointed political cartoonist and art critic for the Pall Mall Gazette, and in 1897 art editor of the Pall Mall Magazine, chief editor 1900-1905.
