STRANGE
(Lt.-Col. Edward Fairbrother, 1862-1929, Keeper of Woodwork at the Victoria and Albert Museum)
Autograph Letter Signed to George Roland Halkett,
(1855-1918, artist and journalist), telling him that "We must have our red tape", and asking him to sign a document, "Rule 1 is the only one bearing on the case. With apologies and many thanks", 2 sides 8vo. black-edged, Victoria and Albert Museum, South Kensington, S.W., 7th July
Strange had many interests as assistant and keeper at the V. and A., including engraving, lettering, furniture, Japanese prints and Chinese lacquer. During the war he commanded the 2nd/15th London Regiment, 1915-1916, and its 13th Reserve Battalion, 1916-1917.
Halkett contributed many drawings to Punch, but was equally interested in politics. His 'The Irish Green Book', 1887, had an enormous circulation during the Home rule controversy. In 1892 he was appointed political cartoonist and art critic for the Pall Mall Gazette, in 1897 art editor of the Pall Mall Magazine, chief editor 1900-1905.
