TUPPER (Martin Farquhar, 1810-1889, F.R.S., Author of 'Proverbial Philosophy' and Inventor)

AQS, "Nothing but should be better; and every better might be best; The blind can discern, & the Simple prove, fault or want in all things", with 2 interesting obituaries from the 'Standard' and the 'Guardian', together 3 sides small 8vo., the quotation no date, c.

Tupper's immensely popular 'Proverbial Philosophy', which came out in four series from 1839 to 1867, was thought at first by the American writer N.P. Willis to be a forgotten work of the 17th century. The 'Standard' tells how Tupper thought of expressing his love for his wife in the manner of Solomon's Proverbs, whence the articles 'On Marriage, Love, Friendship, and so on'.
